Looking For My Own Zam Zam

Shawn Smith - March 30, 2005

Oh Allah, you instructed your servant - Prophet Abraham- to leave his family in a barren land
There was nothing there for mother and son but miles and miles of sand

The child cried out in thirst, the mother cried in despair
She walked between two nearby hills in search of help, but the land was completely bare.

The help it finally came, and the water freely flowed
And on the mother and the son Allah's blessings were bestowed

Oh Allah, now I find myself in a valley of despair
Oh Allah, to you I cry for your tender loving care

Like Hajar of old, I too am making my own Sa'i
Oh Allah, I am looking for my own Zam Zam and I trust you will provide

This poem is in reference to the Islamic version of the story of Abraham and his wife Hajar. Abraham took Hajar and their son Ishmael out into the desert, in what is no called Mecca, and left them there in the hands of God. I encourage you to read the full story to appreciate the fuller meaning of the poem because it is beautiful and inspiring. Note also, that Allah is the Arabic name for God and even the Arab Christians, which number more than 20 million, use the term Allah when referring to God.
