Montreal Muslims Asked To Document Any Attacks Against Them In Wake Of London Bombings
Message from Salam Elmenyawi - President, Muslim Council Of Montreal
Assalamou alaikoum (peace greetings),
Montreal, July 14, 2005 - In the last few days I have been receiving number of reports claiming numerous attacks against Muslims in England and other places. I quote from one of the articles: "There have been almost 100 acts of violence, harassment and vandalism against Muslims and mosques since last Thursday's attacks, police said. "
Another article titled: "First Muslim killed in feared backlash against London bombings".
In addition to the news reports from London, some newspaper have declared a war against the Muslim community, or so it seems from their repeated articles and not so subtle analysis holding the Muslim community at large responsible for these attacks, and their dishonest opinion that British tolerance is the reason for the attacks. Add to this the repeated assertions that Canada is next !!!
These are very serious trends that must be challenged, or put on proper perspective. Until we respond to these allegations and flawed opinions I expect that we would also face a backlash in Canada as a result to London blasts and the media position on this issue, in addition to the many opportunists who are trying to use this incident to advance their own agenda.
To challenge these assertions, and to protect Muslim's rights in Canada we must warn our community first against these unprovoked attacks against Muslims and document any such attacks, even the small ones, as they happen.
Therefore, please announce at your organisation that anyone who becomes a subject of a backlash incident to report it to us as soon as possible, by email or phone calls. The report should include date, time, place and a brief description of the incidence.
Jazakoum Allaho Khiran (may Allah bless you), wa assalam
