Crumbs and Cockroaches

Shawn Smith- July 1, 2006

Oh God, I feast upon your words like a cockroach on a crumb of bread

To me, the crumb is insignificant but to the cockroach it is a veritable banquet

I lift my foot to crush the small dark creature but then, in the last moment, I think I should wait until it is done eating

Funny, I seem to have more compassion for a bug than I do towards fellow human beings with who I claim to posses a natural affinity

I lash out at others with a cruel vindictiveness and then scurry away like a cockroach about to be stepped upon

Back into my dark hole until the coast is clear and then I re-emerge to feast on yet another crumb of bread
